Applicable Animals:

Tiamulin Fumarate is a pleuromutilin-class antibiotic that exhibits strong antibacterial activity against Mycoplasma in pigs and poultry, as well as various Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Streptococci, Staphylococci), and some anaerobic bacteria (e.g., Brachyspira hyodysenteriae). It is primarily used for the treatment and prevention of respiratory and intestinal diseases in pigs and poultry.

Applicable Animals in Global Animal Husbandry:

  • Pigs: Primarily used for the treatment and prevention of enzootic pneumonia (mycoplasmal pneumonia), contagious pleuropneumonia, swine dysentery (caused by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae), bacterial enteritis, and chronic respiratory diseases in pigs.
  • Poultry (Chickens, Turkeys): Primarily used for the treatment and prevention of chronic respiratory disease (CRD), infectious coryza, airsacculitis and synovitis caused by Mycoplasma, and bacterial enteritis in poultry.

Usage and Dosage:

Tiamulin Fumarate premix is typically administered by mixing with feed. The product should be thoroughly mixed with feed before feeding. The dosage should be determined based on product concentration, animal species, body weight, and severity of the condition.

Mixed with Feed (based on active ingredient of Tiamulin Fumarate per ton of feed):

  • Pigs:
    • For treatment of swine dysentery: 25-50 mg/kg of feed (equivalent to 31.25-62.5g of 80% product per ton of feed). Administer for 5-7 days.
    • For treatment of mycoplasmal pneumonia/contagious pleuropneumonia: 50-100 mg/kg of feed (equivalent to 62.5-125g of 80% product per ton of feed). Administer for 5-7 days or as directed by a veterinarian.
    • For prevention and growth promotion: 10-20 mg/kg of feed.
  • Poultry (based on active ingredient of Tiamulin Fumarate per ton of feed):
    • For treatment of chronic respiratory disease/mycoplasma disease: 50-125 mg/kg of feed (equivalent to 62.5-156.25g of 80% product per ton of feed). Administer for 3-5 days.

Dosage by Growth Stage:

  • Piglets/Nursery Pigs: During stressful periods such as pre- or post-weaning and in the nursery phase, respiratory and digestive diseases are common due to stress or environmental changes. It can be added at preventive or low therapeutic doses.
  • Growing-Finishing Pigs: Used to control common diseases such as enzootic pneumonia and swine dysentery, or for early treatment during outbreaks.
  • Breeding Pigs/Breeding Poultry: Can be used for mycoplasma eradication or prevention of related diseases around the breeding period.

Applicable Diseases and Symptoms:

Tiamulin Fumarate is mainly used for the treatment of sensitive diseases and symptoms:

  • Pigs:
    • Respiratory Diseases: Porcine enzootic pneumonia (cough, dyspnea, labored breathing, slow growth), contagious pleuropneumonia (high fever, respiratory distress, coughing, nasal discharge), atrophic rhinitis.
    • Digestive Diseases: Swine dysentery (bloody diarrhea, mucoid feces, emaciation), bacterial enteritis.
  • Poultry:
    • Respiratory Diseases: Chicken chronic respiratory disease (sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge, thickened and cloudy air sacs), infectious coryza, airsacculitis and synovitis (lameness) caused by Mycoplasma.

Precautions:

  • Toxicity: Tiamulin Fumarate is relatively safe, but very high doses may cause central nervous system depression, manifested as sedation and ataxia.
  • Drug Interactions: Tiamulin Fumarate should not be used concurrently with polyether ionophores such as monensin, salinomycin, or narasin, as this may lead to intoxication or death. In veterinary clinical practice, it is generally considered safe to use Tiamulin Fumarate at least 7 days after discontinuing ionophores.
  • Resistance: Prolonged or improper use may lead to the development of bacterial resistance. Use strictly according to veterinary instructions.
  • Withdrawal Period: Strict adherence to the product’s specified withdrawal period is necessary to ensure drug residues in animal products (meat, eggs) comply with food safety standards.
  • Homogenous Mixing: The premix must be thoroughly mixed with feed to ensure accurate drug intake by animals.
  • Stability: Tiamulin may be unstable in humid environments; pay attention to storage conditions and avoid moisture.
  • Storage: Store sealed in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Contraindications:

  • Do not use concurrently with polyether ionophores such as monensin, salinomycin, or narasin. Avoid using Tiamulin Fumarate within 7 days of discontinuing these ionophores.
  • Contraindicated in animals with a known hypersensitivity to Tiamulin.

Post-Administration Care:

  • Observe Animal Status: Closely monitor the animal’s mental state, feed and water intake, respiratory condition, and fecal consistency during and after medication to assess treatment efficacy and detect any adverse reactions.
  • Improve Husbandry Environment: Maintain a clean, hygienic, appropriately temperate, and well-ventilated breeding environment to reduce dust and harmful gases, aiding in the recovery from respiratory diseases.
  • Biosecurity Management: Enhance isolation and disinfection of sick animals to prevent disease spread.
  • Supportive Therapy: For severely ill animals, combine with other symptomatic and supportive therapies, such as vitamin supplementation, electrolytes, and antipyretics.
  • Withdrawal Period Enforcement: Strictly record medication administration and discontinuation times to ensure that the animal is marketed only after the specified withdrawal period.
